Bronchodilators
Types of bronchodilators
Bronchodilators are important in treating COPD symptoms such as breathlessness, cough, and mucus production. There are several kinds of bronchodilators, as well as combinations of them9
- Anticholinergics (anti-coll-in-er-jiks), like ipratropium and tiotropium, work by preventing the muscles around the large airways from tightening.9
- Beta2-agonists (beta 2-a-go-nists) open the small airways by relaxing the muscles around them.9 There are two types of beta2-agonists9:
- Short-acting beta2-agonists, such as albuterol, provide quick relief of breathlessness and are often prescribed to relieve sudden symptoms10
- Long-acting beta2-agonists, such as PERFOROMIST Inhalation Solution (taken morning and evening) provide sustained relief (lasts about 12 hours) and are considered maintenance therapy (taken every day)9.
- Your doctor may prescribe 2 different bronchodilators when one kind is not enough, either because your COPD has gotten worse or because you have developed a tolerance to it.
