- Theophylline (thee-aw-fill-een) relaxes muscles around the breathing passages so the breathing tubes can open and you can breathe easier. This medication is also believed to help decrease swelling in your lungs.9
- Oral corticosteroids (core-ti-co-ster-oydz), such as prednisone, prevent or treat swelling in the airways of the lungs. These drugs are recommended for a limited amount of time, as long-term use has been associated with side effects.9
- Combination therapies for COPD can give you highly effective medicines that are very easy to use.9
- PERFOROMIST Inhalation Solution, a long-acting beta2-agonist, in combination with Spiriva® HandiHaler® (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder), a long-acting anticholinergic drug, is one example of 2 different kinds of bronchodilators that work well together to help patients feel better. This combination is fast-acting and long-acting. Other examples:
- The combination of an anticholinergic drug (ipratropium) with a short-acting beta2-agonist (albuterol), such as DuoNeb® Inhalation Solution. The same combination is also available in a metered dose inhaler.15
- The combination of a long-acting beta2-agonist and an inhaled corticosteroid in a dry powder inhaler, such as Advair Diskus (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol inhalation powder). This combination is long-acting but not fast-acting.16
NOTE: Talk to your doctor for a treatment plan that's right for you.
Spiriva® HandiHaler® (tiotropium bromide inhalation powder) is indicated for the long-term, once-daily maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Spiriva® HandiHaler® is not indicated for the initial treatment of acute episodes of bronchospasm, ie, rescue therapy.
